The impact of oxygen consumption by the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei according to body weight, temperature, salinity and stocking density on pond aeration: a simulation - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i2.7018 Biological Sciences
Vinatea, Luis; UFSC; Muedas, Walter; UFMA; Arantes, Rafael; UFSC.
A simulation was conducted to determinate the impact caused by the combination of Litopenaeus vannamei respiratory rate (mg O2 shrimp-1 h-1), the behavior of SOTR (kg O2 h-1) of mechanical aerators as a function of salinity, as well as the oxygen consumption rate of the pond water and soil (mg O2 L-1 h-1) on the aeration of shrimp ponds (1, 10, 50 and 100 ha) stocked with different densities (10, 40 and 120 shrimp m-2), salinities (1, 13, 25 and 37 ppt), temperatures (20, 25 and 30°C), and shrimp wet weight (5, 10, 15 and 20 g). Results showed that under lower salinity, with larger shrimp, and higher stocking density, higher will be the quantity of required 2-HP aerators to keep dissolved oxygen over 50% saturation. In addition, under low salinity, with 5...

The role of sediment on the energy availability for fishes in the upper Paraná river floodplain - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i4.9335 Biological Sciences
Gimenes, Michele de Faveri; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Takeda, Alice Michiyo; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Benedito, Evanilde; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
This study aimed to identify potential sources of organic matter in sediment, using stable isotopes of carbon (delta13C) and nitrogen (delta15N). Sediment samples were gathered from the margin and in center of three subsystems: Ivinheima, Paraná and Baia, in August/2001. The samples were fractionated granulometrically and separated by size (< 200 µm; 70-200 µm; > 70 µm), prepared and sent to CENA / USP, for identifying the isotopes proportions. Significant differences were detected in the isotopic ratios of the sediment only between sampling stations. The Baía channel presented the lowest delta13C values, while the highest ones were recorded in Paraná river. At this last, delta15N values were negative (-14.41‰). We did not verify significant...

The sleep-wakefulness cycle of Wistar rats with spontaneous absence-like epilepsy Biological Sciences
André, Edison Sanfelice; Bruno-Neto, Rafael; Valle, Angela Cristina do; Timo-Iaria, César.
Possible interactions between the sleep-wakefulness cycle and a new kind of spontaneous epilepsy, expressed as absence-like seizures and spike-wave bursts in FMUSP rats, are evaluated. The electro-oscillograms of some cortical and subcortical regions of the brain were recorded, as well as head, rostrum/vibrissae and eye movements. Recordings were performed uninterruptedly during 24 hours. The seizures were mostly concentrated in the wakefulness state but they could occur in any other phase, including paradoxical sleep. After the seizure, the rats usually returned to the same phase that was interrupted, although they often returned to wakefulness. There was an intense fragmentation of the sleep-wakefulness cycle. The incidence of each cycle phase was...

The study of fractals among ecologists - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i1.7701 Biological Sciences
Mormul, Roger Paulo; Universidade Estadual de Maringá - UEM; Padial, André Andrian; Universidade Federal de Goiás & Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Mato Grosso do Sul.
Fractals seemed to have permeated most scientific fields, including ecology. In fact, biodiversity and ecological processes are affected by spatial complexity, and fractals can help understand patterns at multiple scales. In this paper we evaluated the main quantitative trends and the profile of ecology publications using fractals. Publications about fractals in Ecology experienced a high increase in the last two decades, and most articles were published in highly visible ecology journals. However, studies were authored mainly by US scientists, and researchers from developing countries had a minor contribution. In addition, studies were highly biased towards terrestrial environments, and empirical approaches were preferred.

The use of biomarkers for assessing effects of pollutant stress on fish species from a tropical river in Southeastern Brazil Biological Sciences
Morado, Claudio Nona; Araújo, Francisco Gerson; Gomes, Iracema David.
Biomarkers are measurements within an organism that respond to environmental effects and are used as tools in bioassessment programs since they reflect physiological changes induced by exposure to pollutants. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) and the condition factor (CF) in three fish species Geophagus brasiliensis, Hypostomus affinis and Hypostomus auroguttatus were used to assess effects of pollutant stress in a tropical river during two seasons (dry and wet). Fish from the least disturbed sites had the lowest condition factor (CF) and the lowest HSI, whereas those from sites near pollutant discharges had the highest CF and HSI. Higher HSI and lower CF occurred during the dry season. It is suggested that species adapted to stressful conditions take...

Thermal structure of the Poraquê lake, Central Amazonian, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i2.5150 Biological Sciences
Aprile, Fabio Marques; Laboratório Max Planck - INPA.
Thermal gradient of a Central Amazonian lake was studied to establish a link between seasonal variations in the water level, temperature, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and thermal stratification. Bimonthly measurements of temperature and PAR radiation were made at 0.25 m intervals from the surface to bottom from February 2004 to July 2006. Daily occurs full vertical mixing of the water column, and classic thermal stratification was not observed in the period. The effect of the winds associated to flood-pulse and the penetrative convection, transported the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) into the lake mixing the column of water. This phenomenon was more expressive in the rainfall seasons when is generally higher contributing to the circulation of the...
